Beyond the Burnout: A Quiet Return to Wholeness

Updated: Sep 19

Lesley Nickleson Functional Dietitian Beyond the Burnout

I have been quiet here- and for good reason.

After months (well - years really) of pouring myself into a full-time clinical role and on the side private practice I hit a point of no return: burnout!

Not the kind of burnout that announces itself all at once, but the slow, quiet kind that builds layer by layer. It crept in after long months of managing a full-time clinical role - the 40-hour work week, full of back to back client sessions. And building my Private Practice every moment in between during early mornings, late evenings and weekends- pouring my heart into what I love: creating personalized nutrition plans. But even love, when it isn’t balanced, can lead to depletion.

In a time of radical honesty- I decided to do what I would lovingly tell any client to do. I paused. I declared July as my month of solace — a sacred return to wholeness.

I slowed down, cleared my calendar, let go of social media and reconnected with what truly nourishes me — time with my daughters and son, morning rituals, quiet moments and even travel to Saint Paul de Vence, France. Slowly, my nervous system is beginning to settle and I am starting to feel joy again.

In the process, something is shifting. I no longer want the grind and hussle culture. I no longer feel the need to keep up in soical media or to carry a pattern of over-giving, over responsibility. I am shifting and choosing an energy of creativity, expansion and flow.

Right now, I do not have all the answers about what’s next in my business or my life, but I am learning that it is okay. I am learning to trust the process and give myself permission to move at my own pace.

Burnout isn’t just feeling tired — it’s a deep exhaustion that seeps into every part of our lives. It drains our energy, clouds our thinking and can disrupt even the most basic self-care habits. When burnout takes hold, it may not be just our work that suffers, but our relationships, our bodies and our greater sense of purpose. It is a silent weight that can make even getting out of bed feel like a challenge. Speaking openly about burnout is not easy for me, but I want you to know you are not alone if you are feeling this way too.

Sometimes, the bravest thing we can do is honor the pause and listen deeply to our own needs.

Now that August is here, I am beginning to return — slowly, with creativity flowing. Reconnecting with the greater purpose of what wants to come through - helping to honour the deep healing that I believe the world needs now. I have plans and programs in the making- but creating from an energy of joy not depletion matters most now.

If you are feeling the heaviness of burnout, I hope this reminds you: you are not alone. You do not have to earn your rest. You do not have to keep pushing. There is a way back. There is a way home.

And it might begin with a pause.
