As a Functional Dietitian, I have the privilege of witnessing something truly remarkable. Not just small improvements, but real, meaningful transformation. This is what becomes possible when we stop chasing symptoms and begin addressing the root cause of what is happening within the body.

Why a Root Cause Approach to Health Changes Everything

Over time, I have come to recognize a familiar pattern. Many women arrive feeling exhausted, frustrated, and disconnected from their bodies. They have tried countless approaches including diets, supplements, weight loss programs and yet something still feels off.

Despite their effort, they are left searching for answers, often wondering why nothing seems to work for them. And then, when we start addressing the deeper root cause, something begins to shift. Not overnight, but gradually and consistently, the body starts to respond in a different way.

Here are some of the transformations and real results I see in my practice with a root cause appraoch.

Weight Loss Through a Root Cause Approach

One of the first changes I often see is with weight. Rather than forcing weight loss through restriction, the body begins to release weight naturally when it is brought back into balance.

By addressing underlying factors such as inflammation, nutrient deficiencies or imbalances in the gut microbiome, the body starts to function as it was designed to. In this state of alignment, weight loss becomes a byproduct of healing rather than something that must be controlled.

It is not uncommon to see women release 15 to 20 pounds over a period of a few months, not through willpower, but through support.

For some, this begins with aligning their nutrition more closely with their body’s true needs. For others, it is about adjusting meal timing and patterns to better regulate metabolic hormones. And for many, it starts with something as simple as moving away from highly processed foods and learning how to prepare a few nourishing meals with whole ingredients.

Healing Digestion by Addressing Root Cause

Another profound shift often occurs in digestion. Many women come in experiencing daily discomfort with symptoms of bloating, heartburn, abdominal pain, that has quietly become their normal.

When we begin to explore the root cause, identify triggers, and support the digestive system with targeted nutrition, functional foods, and simple protocols, those symptoms begin to ease. Digestion becomes more comfortable, energy improves, and there is often a renewed sense of well-being that they had not realized was possible. (Related Article: The Inside Scoop 4R Gut Protocol)

How a Root Cause Approach Improves Sleep

Sleep is another area where transformation frequently unfolds. Poor sleep is one of the most overlooked contributors to imbalance in the body, yet it influences everything from energy and mood to cravings and weight regulation.

When the body is supported with the right nutrients, when natural rhythms are restored, and when space is created for true rest, sleep begins to deepen. With better sleep comes improved resilience, clearer thinking, and a noticeable shift in how the body feels day to day. (Related: Why Sleep Changes in Midlife)

Reducing Symptoms with a Root Cause Approach to Health

One of the most powerful ways I measure overall progress is through the My Symptom Questionnaire (MSQ), which reflects the burden of symptoms across different systems in the body.

What I often observe is a dramatic reduction in these scores over a relatively short period of time. Clients who begin with high symptom burdens, scores in the range of 180 to 200, can see those numbers drop to below 50 within a matter of months. This level of change reflects more than symptom management; it is a sign that healing is taking place at a deeper, systemic level.

Transforming Your Relationship with Food and Your Body

Perhaps the most meaningful transformation, however, is not physical but emotional. Many women have spent years, even decades, in a difficult relationship with food and their bodies. They have lived in cycles of restriction and release, constantly starting over, carrying guilt and questioning their choices.

Through a root cause approach, something begins to soften. Food is no longer something to control or fear but something that nourishes and supports. The body is no longer seen as the problem, but as something to understand and care for. Over time, this shift brings a sense of ease and peace that is often just as powerful as any physical change. Simple Ways to Start a Root Cause Approach to Health

A root cause approach to health is not about doing everything perfectly. It is about beginning to support your body in ways that are simple, consistent, and meaningful.

Here are 5 simple healing steps you can begin today:

1. Count plants, not calories. Focus on increasing the quantity & quality of plant based foods in your diet. Try for a minimum of 5 per day and challenge yourself to increase.

2. Enjoy a daily bowl of berries. The antioxidants are stored in the colour pigment so go for a bowl of colourful berries packed with powerful plant compounds.

3. Address what you eat but also HOW. Meal pattern and timing matters and the new theory in weight management is to lower insulin by reducing snacking. Go for 3 daily balanced meals. Pick a protein, add a vegetable, include healthy fats, use 100% whole grains only (not every meal) & top off with fruit.

4. Use healing herbs and spices with every meal. These are concentrated sources of plant nutrients that have strong healing properties.

5. Nourish daily in Nature. Get out in nature everyday to reset your nervous system because healing happens in a parasympathetic state.

A New Way Forward: From Symptoms to Healing

If you have been living with ongoing symptoms, feeling stuck in your body, or searching for answers that seem just out of reach, this is an invitation to consider a different approach. One that moves beyond surface-level solutions and begins to support the body at the level it truly needs. Because when you address the root cause, healing is no longer something to chase, it becomes something your body is capable of doing.
